{"vuid":"VU#478225","idnumber":"478225","name":"AOL SuperBuddy ActiveX fails to properly validate method arguments","keywords":["America Online","SuperBuddy","ActiveX Control","arbitrary code execution","sb.dll","object pointer","argument","LinkSBIcons()"],"overview":"The AOL SuperBuddy ActiveX control does not properly validate arguments to the LinkSBIcons() method. This vulnerability may allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.","clean_desc":"The AOL SuperBuddy ActiveX control (Sb.SuperBuddy.1) is a component that comes with AOL software. This control contains the method LinkSBIcons(), which takes an address as an argument. This address is user-controlled and not validated before it is dereferenced, possibly allowing an attacker to overwrite arbitrary process memory. Note that the AOL SuperBuddy ActiveX control is marked as \"safe for scripting\" . This allows the vulnerability to be triggered by viewing a specially crafted HTML document. Exploit code for this vulnerability is publicly available.","impact":"By convincing a user to view a specially crafted HTML document (e.g., a web page or an HTML email message or attachment), an attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user. The attacker could also cause Internet Explorer (or the program using the WebBrowser control, such as the AOL browser) to crash.","resolution":"Apply an update\nThis issue is addressed by AOL automatic updates. Log in to the AOL service to receive the appropriate update automatically. Some systems come pre-loaded with AOL software. Since AOL security updates are distributed by signing on to AOL, the following workarounds should be applied if AOL is not being used:","workarounds":"Disable the SuperBuddy ActiveX control The AOL SuperBuddy ActiveX control can be disabled by setting the kill bit for the following CLSID: {189504B8-50D1-4AA8-B4D6-95C8F58A6414} More information about how to set the kill bit is available in Microsoft Support Document 240797. Disable ActiveX Disabling ActiveX controls in the Internet Zone (or any zone used by an attacker) appears to prevent exploitation of this vulnerability. Instructions for disabling ActiveX in the Internet Zone can be found in the \"Securing Your Web Browser\" document and the Malicious Web Scripts FAQ.","sysaffected":"","thanks":"This vulnerability was publicly disclosed in TippingPoint Security Advisory \nTSRT-07-03","author":"This document was written by Jeff Gennari.","public":["http://www.tippingpoint.com/security/advisories/TSRT-07-03.html","http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/23224","http://secunia.com/advisories/24714/","http://www.aolepk.com/super_buddy/"],"cveids":["CVE-2006-5820"],"certadvisory":"","uscerttechnicalalert":null,"datecreated":"2007-04-02T16:37:53Z","publicdate":"2007-03-30T00:00:00Z","datefirstpublished":"2007-04-05T13:10:17Z","dateupdated":"2007-04-05T13:32:39Z","revision":17,"vrda_d1_directreport":"0","vrda_d1_population":"3","vrda_d1_impact":"3","cam_widelyknown":"8","cam_exploitation":"0","cam_internetinfrastructure":"5","cam_population":"13","cam_impact":"20","cam_easeofexploitation":"15","cam_attackeraccessrequired":"20","cam_scorecurrent":"19.0125","cam_scorecurrentwidelyknown":"36.5625","cam_scorecurrentwidelyknownexploited":"65.8125","ipprotocol":"","cvss_accessvector":"","cvss_accesscomplexity":"","cvss_authentication":null,"cvss_confidentialityimpact":"","cvss_integrityimpact":"","cvss_availabilityimpact":"","cvss_exploitablity":null,"cvss_remediationlevel":"","cvss_reportconfidence":"","cvss_collateraldamagepotential":"","cvss_targetdistribution":"","cvss_securityrequirementscr":"","cvss_securityrequirementsir":"","cvss_securityrequirementsar":"","cvss_basescore":"","cvss_basevector":"","cvss_temporalscore":"","cvss_environmentalscore":"","cvss_environmentalvector":"","metric":19.0125,"vulnote":null}
