{"vuid":"VU#495556","idnumber":"495556","name":"VERITAS NetBackup Java Administration Console contains a format string vulnerability in \"bpjava-msvc\"","keywords":["VERITAS","NetBackup","Java Display Console","format string","bpjava-msvc","Java authentication service","COMMAND_LOGON_TO_MSERVER","SYM05-018"],"overview":"The VERITAS NetBackup Java Administration Console contains a format string vulnerability, which may allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code with root or SYSTEM privileges.","clean_desc":"The Java Administration Console is an alternative administrative interface for the VERITAS NetBackup software. It is also referred to as the \"Java GUI\" or the \"Java Display Console.\"  One of the components of the Java Administration Console, bpjava-msvc, is used for authentication purposes. bpjava-msvc listens on 13722/tcp on both NetBackup client and server systems. The bpjava-msvc  service contains a format string vulnerability. According to VERITAS support document 279085, the following versions of NetBackup are vulnerable: NetBackup 3.4, all versions, all platforms. NetBackup 4.5, all versions, all platforms. NetBackup 5.0, all versions, all platforms. NetBackup 5.1, all versions, all platforms. NetBackup 6.0, all versions, all platforms. Exploit code for this vulnerability is publicly available.","impact":"A remote, unauthenticated attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code with root or SYSTEM privileges.","resolution":"Apply a patch or upgrade\nApply a patch or upgrade, as specified in the VERITAS support document 279085.","workarounds":"Restrict access You may wish to block access to the vulnerable software from outside your network perimeter, specifically by blocking access to the ports used by bpjava-msvc (typically 13722/tcp). This will limit your exposure to attacks. However, blocking at the network perimeter would still allow attackers within the perimeter of your network to exploit the vulnerability. The use of host-based firewalls in addition to network-based firewalls can help restrict access to specific hosts within the network. It is important to understand your network's configuration and service requirements before deciding what changes are appropriate.","sysaffected":"","thanks":"Thanks to VERITAS for reporting this vulnerability, who in turn credit TippingPoint for reporting the vulnerability.","author":"This document was written by Will Dormann.","public":["http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/279085.htm","http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/p-020.shtml"],"cveids":[""],"certadvisory":"","uscerttechnicalalert":null,"datecreated":"2005-10-12T13:11:50Z","publicdate":"2005-10-11T00:00:00Z","datefirstpublished":"2005-10-12T17:59:21Z","dateupdated":"2005-10-24T20:31:44Z","revision":10,"vrda_d1_directreport":"","vrda_d1_population":"","vrda_d1_impact":"","cam_widelyknown":"20","cam_exploitation":"10","cam_internetinfrastructure":"14","cam_population":"8","cam_impact":"20","cam_easeofexploitation":"7","cam_attackeraccessrequired":"15","cam_scorecurrent":"13.86","cam_scorecurrentwidelyknown":"13.86","cam_scorecurrentwidelyknownexploited":"17.01","ipprotocol":"","cvss_accessvector":"","cvss_accesscomplexity":"","cvss_authentication":null,"cvss_confidentialityimpact":"","cvss_integrityimpact":"","cvss_availabilityimpact":"","cvss_exploitablity":null,"cvss_remediationlevel":"","cvss_reportconfidence":"","cvss_collateraldamagepotential":"","cvss_targetdistribution":"","cvss_securityrequirementscr":"","cvss_securityrequirementsir":"","cvss_securityrequirementsar":"","cvss_basescore":"","cvss_basevector":"","cvss_temporalscore":"","cvss_environmentalscore":"","cvss_environmentalvector":"","metric":13.86,"vulnote":null}
