{"vuid":"VU#599220","idnumber":"599220","name":"ClamAV vulnerable to buffer overflow via malicious database mirror","keywords":["Apple","Mac","OS X","ClamAV","stack-based","buffer overflow","database mirror","freshclam"],"overview":"The Open Source anti-virus program ClamAV's update engine, freshclam, contains a buffer overflow vulnerability. If exploited, an attacker could create a denial-of-service condition, or possibly run arbitrary code with the privileges of the freshclam process.","clean_desc":"Freshclam is a command line utility that installs and updates virus signatures that are used by the ClamAV anti-virus software. It uses the HTTP protocol to perform file downloads from various web servers that host virus signature updates. By directly changing one of the HTTP mirrors, or by using another means of redirecting the freshclam process to an attacker-controlled HTTP server, the attacker could cause a denial-of-service condition by sending an oversized HTTP header to the freshclam process. Note that ClamAV and freshclam server and client programs are available for Microsoft Windows, Linux, Apple OS X, and BSD operating systems.","impact":"A remote attacker may create a denial-of-service condition. The vendor reports that remote execution of arbitrary code would not be easy due to diversity of client platforms and architectures.","resolution":"Upgrade\nSee the systems affected section of this document for information about specific vendors. Users who compile ClamAV from source are encouraged to upgrade to ClamAV version 0.88.2.","workarounds":"","sysaffected":"","thanks":"","author":"This document was written by Ryan Giobbi.","public":["http://www.clamav.net/security/0.88.2.html","http://secunia.com/advisories/19880","http://www.debian.org/security/2006/dsa-1050","http://lists.apple.com/archives/security-announce/2006/Jun/msg00000.html"],"cveids":["CVE-2006-1989"],"certadvisory":"","uscerttechnicalalert":null,"datecreated":"2006-06-28T12:19:38Z","publicdate":"2006-06-27T00:00:00Z","datefirstpublished":"2006-06-28T17:19:35Z","dateupdated":"2006-06-29T19:59:33Z","revision":29,"vrda_d1_directreport":"0","vrda_d1_population":"2","vrda_d1_impact":"2","cam_widelyknown":"15","cam_exploitation":"1","cam_internetinfrastructure":"3","cam_population":"3","cam_impact":"3","cam_easeofexploitation":"3","cam_attackeraccessrequired":"11","cam_scorecurrent":"0.10580625","cam_scorecurrentwidelyknown":"0.13365","cam_scorecurrentwidelyknownexploited":"0.23945625","ipprotocol":"","cvss_accessvector":"","cvss_accesscomplexity":"","cvss_authentication":null,"cvss_confidentialityimpact":"","cvss_integrityimpact":"","cvss_availabilityimpact":"","cvss_exploitablity":null,"cvss_remediationlevel":"","cvss_reportconfidence":"","cvss_collateraldamagepotential":"","cvss_targetdistribution":"","cvss_securityrequirementscr":"","cvss_securityrequirementsir":"","cvss_securityrequirementsar":"","cvss_basescore":"","cvss_basevector":"","cvss_temporalscore":"","cvss_environmentalscore":"","cvss_environmentalvector":"","metric":0.10580625,"vulnote":null}
